Explained: Formula and criteria for marking CBSE Class 12 students

Class 12 students of the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) are likely to have their results based on their performances in exams from class 11 and class 10, and class 12 pre-board exams. School principals told the Times of India that the CBSE appointed a 13-member committee to discuss the criteria to assess the Class 12 students and formulate the results. 

According to the report, the committee was in favour of the formula, 30% weightage to class 10 and class 11 final results, and 40% weightage to class 12 pre-board exams. The committee is expected to announce the formula after its submission to the Supreme Court on June 17.

The theory exams for class 12 were initially scheduled to begin from May 4. They were later postponed indefinitely. On June 7, the CBSE first asked schools to conduct their pending class 12 internal assessments through online mode, and submit marks by June 28. On June 1, CBSE became the first board to cancel the class 12 exams. Many state boards, including Maharashtra, later cancelled their class 12 exams. 

Principals told the committee that it was possible for them to mark their students based on tests and exams conducted in schools in the academic year 2020-21. “More weightage should be given to the class 12 periodic tests, pre-board marks, and internal assessments”, said a principal, adding that stressing on class 11 exams would be unfair to students since they did not take class 11 seriously.
