Adrien Brody saw co-star Ana de Armas transform into Marilyn Monroe for the Blonde movie, for the first time before they did their scene together. Recalling the instance during the US premiere of the Andrew Dominik-helmed film, Brody told Variety, “I was transported to another time and place”.

The actor, who plays Arthur Miller – Monroe’s third husband, and noted American playwright – continued, “I really thought she channelled [Marilyn] — she brought a nuanced, emotionally present [and] connected impression of her. I’m still blown away by it. It was really impressive.”

Blonde is based on Joyce Carol Oates’ novel of the same name and presents the iconic actor’s life in a reimagined version. Norma Jeane Baker’s traumatic childhood is traced to her rise as Marilyn Monroe – America’s sweetheart.

Since the biopic blurs lines between fact and fiction, there are questions about whether some of the graphic moments in the movie are real or fabricated. Brody shared his thoughts on Blonde, saying “I think the beauty of the film is that it shares an aspect of [Marilyn’s] life that is probably not as clearly defined in most people’s hearts and minds”, and added, “If you’re really a fan, you’d probably want to understand a bit more about her life and her realities, and what she struggled with to deliver all that amazing work and represent the image that everyone is going to love.”

Ana de Armas’ casting as Monroe had created a buzz long before the movie had reached its final stages, with the Cuban actor praising the part as well. Now, co-star Evan Williams has also drawn parallels between de Armas and Monroe, saying “There [wasn’t] a better choice to play Marilyn because art imitates life”, and added, “[Ana] knows so much about the way the public wants a piece of her, so she was able to speak to that, and she does it with flying colours.”

Blonde is available on Netflix from September 28.
