Emmys 2021: 5 best moments from the award show

The 73rd Primetime Emmy Awards concluded on Sunday
night (local time) in Los Angeles. The Crown, Ted Lasso and The Queen’s Gambit
were the favourites for the honours and all the shows won big. Here are the
best moments from this year’s award show.

Where’s my f—ing Emmy? Pre-recorded banter

It has been established that this year’s humour at the Emmys hit a
new low. None of the jokes seemed to work out and left the audience cringing.
However, one pre-recorded sketch did make the audience’s stomach hurt from
laughter. It featured a number of artists who failed to win an Emmy despite being
nominated multiple times. The video featured Scott Bakula, Fred Savage, Alyson
Hannigan and Zooey Deschanel among others.

Michaela Coel’s acceptance speech

The actor and writer recorded a surprise win at the Emmys for outstanding
writing for a limited series. Her work in the critically acclaimed series “I May
Destroy You” got the recognition it deserves. She dedicated her win to “every
single survivor of sexual assault”. The show is inspired from her own story
which follows a young woman trying to rebuild her life after being drugged and
raped at a nightclub.

Kerry Washington’s tribute to Michael K. Williams

While presenting the award for outstanding supporting actor in a
drama series Washington took a moment to pay homage to legendary actor Michael
K. Williams. The actor famous for his role in The Wire was found dead in his
apartment on September 6. This could have been his maiden Emmys win but the
award was won by “The Crown” actor Tobias Menzies.

Women dominate directing awards

The Crown’s Jessica Hobbs became the fourth woman in 67 years to
win the award for Outstanding Directing for a drama series. In her acceptance
speech Hobbs said, “Not a lot of
women have won this award so I feel I’m standing on the shoulders of some really
extraordinary people,”

While Hacks co-creator Lucia Aniello became the fifth woman ever to win
Oustanding Director for a comedy series.

Debbie Allen won the governor’s award

The Governors Award is handed out to an individual or an organisation
for exceptional and universal achievement that goes beyond the annual Emmy
awards recognition. A teary-eyed Allen told the audience, “It’s taken a lot of courage to be the
only woman in the room most of the time. A lot of courage and creativity and
fight and faith to believe that I could keep going and I have.”
