‘Haseen Dillruba’, the title of this Vinil Mathew film makes you think of the setting in the world of fantasy where a sex siren is planning some nasty thing. The film has layers to love, parallel stories like sweet and sour exchange of words between Taapsee Pannu and her mother-in-law and all the discussion between love and arranged marriages. These conversations take you from reel life to your real life happenings.
And for Director Vinil, these parallel emotions were equally important.
“The film needed a lot of humour,” he told Opoyi and passed on the credit to writer Kanika Dhillon.

“There are two things, first is Kanika’s writing and dialogues are always funny. She has got a crazy and wacky sense of humour so in the first draft only, humour was jumping out at me so it would be very silly of me to cancel that out. My effort as a director was how to make it gaudy and make it impactful. I also enjoy doing humour as it is my favourite genre,” he said
Humour is not the only element here, if you thought this is just another comedy. The film in parts gets dark and intense and there are moments, which leave you with a sense of bitterness. “So we never wanted to make this an experience where people only remember the dark part. The idea was to entertain everyone and the family should watch it together.”
Vinil, who has previously directed ‘Hasee Toh Phasee’, talked about his first reaction to the script by Kanika, who previously worked on films like ‘Manmarziyaan’, ‘Kedarnath’, ‘Judgmentall Hai Kya’ and ‘Guilty’.
“When Kanika first narrated the story to me, the film was called ‘Heer’ at that time. She had created this beautiful world and it was an intense love story. One week after the narration, the story was stuck in my head. It was a very beautiful, romantic, pulp, intense love story that also had the beat of a thriller,” he said.
To Vinil, the script was a “compelling material”.
“There is a lot of humour, there is thrill… it just seemed like really compelling material to get into. So a month after Kanika narrated it to me, I called her up and said I would like to do it,” he said.
Kanika was previously associated with films like ‘Manmarziyaan’, ‘Kedarnath’, ‘Judgmentall Hai Kya’ and ‘Guilty’. Harshvardhan Rane also plays a pivotal role in the film.
Vinil previously directed ‘Hasee Toh Phasee’ which emerged as both commercial and critical success.
