When he won the men’s javelin throw, Neeraj Chopra became the first Indian to take home an Olympic gold medal in athletics. Additionally, it was the nation’s first gold medal in a track and field competition.

In the village of Khandra in Haryana’s Panipat district, where he was raised, Chopra, India’s top javelin thrower and the current Asian and Commonwealth Games champion, had never even seen a javelin, much less anticipated being the first person in the nation to throw one and win gold. The main reason why so many Indian youths are now interested in javelin is Neeraj Chopra.
