The Tokyo Olympics, in the opening ceremony, observed a breathtaking performance by a group of international musicians  Angelique Kidjo, John Legend, Alejandro Sanz, and Keith Urban. The group sang a pre-taped rendition of John Lennon and Yoko Ono’s ‘Imagine’, arranged by the Oscar-winning composer Hans Zimmer. Social media users couldn’t help but throw it back to the time when Gal Gadot  assembled Kristen Wiig, Will Ferrell, Leslie Odom Jr., and Mark Ruffalo to cover the same track in an off-key version in March 2020.

The actor did so in a bid for pop culture lovers to associate it with the confusing early weeks of quarantine.

Kidjo took over the children’s choir singing the track in a white set. The performance was more inspired by the cover of a group of Korean singers who performed the song during the opening ceremony of the 2018 PyeongChang Games than the one by Gadot and Co. NBC’s Savannah Guthrie later said, “If the games were a song, ‘Imagine’ would be the song.”

However, Twitter users threw it back hard and it is safe to say some of the comments were downright hilarious. A user wrote, “Gal Gadot seeing she wasn’t invited to help sing Imagine #Tokyo2020 #Olympics”

Another said, “The Tokyo games saw Gal Gadot‘s imagine video and decided, yes, more of that.”

One of the users took a jibe at her performance and said, “john lennon turning in the grave because now imagine will forever be known as the song gal gadot and her celebrity friends sang in their multi-million dollar mansion while people died right outside those gates”

“ I still think Gal Gadot and her super friends singing “Imagine” was the lowest point we achieved as a collective society during covid,” said another.

The Tokyo Olympics this year are being carried on without spectators due to the pandemic. Fans are watching their favourite teams from the comfort of their homes.
