Aravindh Chithambaram Veerappan is the winner of the 41st Villa DeBenasque International Chess Tournament. He is also an Indian Chess grandmaster who won Indian Chess championships twice in 2018 and 2019.
In the International Chess Tournament, Chithambaram, Hovhannisyan and Sadhwani finished on eight points from 10 rounds along with seven others. Chithambaram, a former national champion, took the top prize on the basis of a superior tie-break score. Sadhwani is also an Indian who secured the third place in the tournament.
Chithambaram’s coach RB Ramesh praised him and tweeted about his win , “Congratulations to Aravindh Chithambaram for winning the Benasque open 2022!” “Congratulations to @sadhwani2005 as well for joint first and coming third on tie break.”
Aravindh Chithambaram Veerappan was born in Thirunagar in 1999. He learnt playing chess from his paternal grandfather at the age of seven. Aravindh’s father died when he was 3 and he was raised by his mother. Aravindh won the Indian U19 Chess Championship at the age of 12 and he won his first major tournament in 2013 where he defeated four grandmasters and two International masters.
Aravindh is a graduate in Tamil literature. He earned his International Master title in 2014 and his Grandmaster title in 2015. He also participated in the 2018 Aeroflot Open.
During the pandemic, Aravindh was also part of the team that won the Gold for India at the FIDE Online Olympiad.
