The Art Deco statue of Jesus Christ known as Christ the Redeemer was built in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, by Brazilian engineer Heitor da Silva Costa and French engineer Albert Caquot. It was designed by French sculptor Paul Landowski. The face was sculpted by Romanian sculptor Gheorghe Leonida.

Christ the Redeemer, which was built between 1922 and 1931, has an 8 metre (26 feet) pedestal and is 30 metres (98 feet) tall. The arms extend to 28 metres (92 feet).

The statue, which serves as a global emblem of Christianity and a cultural landmark for Rio de Janeiro and Brazil, was selected as one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. Christ the Redeemer is located at the summit of the Corcovado mountain, 706 metres above the city (2,316ft).

The statue’s construction started in Paris, France, in 1926. Then it was transported by ship from France to Brazil, where it was divided into sections and railroaded up the mountain to be assembled. In 1931, the statue was unveiled during a formal ceremony honouring the 100th anniversary of Brazilian independence.
