‘Mo Brooks is disappointing’: Trump criticises his endorsement for Senate

“Mo Brooks is disappointing”, former United States President Donald Trump said in an interview nearly a year after officially endorsing the Alabama lawmaker. Brooks, who is currently a part of the United States House of Representatives, is competing for the Senate.

Trump has backed Brooks since last April, more than a year ahead of the upcoming May 24 primary, rewarding the conservative firebrand and ally who whipped up a crowd of Trump supporters at January 6, 2021, rally that preceded the Capitol riot.

Trump told the Washington Examiner that Brooks gave an “inarticulate answer” about remarks he had made during an August rally with Trump in Alabama that briefly resulted in jeers from the crowd.

The former US President bet on Brooks’ candidacy for the US Senate seat from Alabama in April 2021, nearly one year ahead of the primary elections. 

Brooks is currently fighting for the Republican party nomination and is taking on two contenders at once: Mike Durant and Katie Britt.

Britt is the former head of state business group, while Durant is best known as the helicopter pilot shot down and held prisoner in the 1993 “Black Hawk Down” incident, according to reports from Associated Press.

“It is a very tight race between the three of them right now, and I’m not particularly happy”, Trump told Washington Examiner, hinting that he may be open to endorsing another candidate for the upcoming polls. Richard Shelby, a member of the Republican party and currently a Senator from Alabama, will be completing the six-year term.

Trump’s backing is a valuable campaign asset for Brooks in a state where Trump won 62% of the vote in the last presidential contest and remains deeply popular with Republicans. Any wavering by Trump would be seen as a blow to Brooks’ campaign.
