- 'The Sandman' series will release on August 5
- Tom Sturridge plays Morpheus
- The series is based on Neil Gaiman's comics of the same name
‘The Sandman‘ is the highly anticipated Netflix adaptation of the critically lauded comic book series of the same name, by Neil Gaiman. It has now set a release date of August 5.
The announcement came from the Netflix Geeked Week panel where a teaser for the upcoming project was also shown.
Viewers see Morpheus or Dream, the protagonist. He’s trapped by a group of sorcerers, but escapes and returns to his realm, to find that things have fallen apart during his captivity.
In the comics, Dream is one of the Endless or a group that represents natural aspects or forces like Desire and Death. The character is a personification of all that is not real.

“The dreams and nightmares no longer seem to recognize their master”, says Tom Sturridge, who is playing Dream. He adds in the trailer, “I will remind them.”
The teaser also offers a glimpse at many of the characters who will be appearing in ‘The Sandman’ series. This includes Gwendoline Christie as the ruler of hell Lucifer, Vivienne Acheampong as Dreaming librarian Lucienne, Jenna Coleman as the occult detective Johanna Constantine, Kirby Howell-Baptiste as Dream’s sister Death, and Boyd Holbrook as the living nightmare The Corinthian, who is one of the primary antagonists.

The cast is rounded up by Charles Dance, Asim Chaudhry, Sanjeev Bhaskar, Mason Alexander Park, Donna Preston, Joely Richardson, David Thewlis, Kyo Ra, Stephen Fry, Razane Jammal, and Sandra James-Young. Patton Oswalt voices Matthew, Dream’s raven.
An adaptation of the comic series has been in the works for a long time, with Joseph Gordon-Levitt initially attached to appear as Morpheus. However, he quit the 2013 project in 2016, due to creative differences. Warner Bros eventually shifted the project to television and struck a deal with Netflix in 2019 to produce this series.
