Who is John Legend?

John Roger Stephens, professionally known as John Legend, is an American singer, songwriter, pianist, actor and record producer. John Legend is the first African American man to have won all four American entertainment awards including, Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony. 

Today he is in the headlines after his wife, model Chrissy Teigen, announced that the couple is expecting their third child. Teigen posted a photo on instagram that shows her visibly pregnant and said, “joy has filled our home and hearts again.” Teigen had a miscarriage two years ago.

Who is John Legend? 

John Legend was born on December 28, 1978, in Springfield, Ohio. He started his musical career by playing the piano on Lauryn Hill’s Everything is Everything and making uncredited guest appearances on Jay-Z’s Encore and Alicia Key’s You Don’t Know My Name. His debut album, Get Lifted was released in 2004 and reached the top ten on the Billboard 200. It was certified as double platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America.

His album Get Lifted earned him eight nominations at the 48th Annual Grammy Awards. He released his second studio album Once Again in 2006. It became his second top ten album on the Billboard 200 chart. His third album, Evolver was released in 2008. His lead single, Green Light featuring Andre 300, reached the top 40 on the Billboard Hot 100 and was certified platinum by RIAA. 

John Legend’s fourth album, Love in the Future (2013), had the single All of Me, which peaked to number one on the Billboard Hot 100. It got 13x platinum by the RIAA. He released Darkness and Light in 2016, A Legendary Christmas in 2018 and Bigger Love in 2020.

John Legend received the Hal David Starlight Award from the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2007. He won the Academy Award for the Best Original Song and Golden Globe Award in 2015 for co-writing the song Glory from the film Selma. 

Legend has received a total of twelve Grammy Awards. He portrayed Jesus Christ in NBC’s adaptation of the rock opera Jesus Christ Superstar in 2018. He received a Primetime Emmy Award nomination for his acting role and won as a producer of the show. John Legend has been featured as a coach on The Voice.

John Legend and Chrissy Teigen got married in 2013 and have two children aged 5 and 3.
