Scott Fitzgerald, the full name Francis Scott Key Fitzgerald was an American short-story writer and novelist famous for his depictions of the Jazz Age (the 1920s). The Great Gatsby, published in 1925 was one of his most brilliant novels.

Fitzgerald was on born September 24, 1896, in St. Paul, Minnesota, and died on December 21, 1940, in Hollywood, California.

The Great Gatsby was inspired by a youthful romance Fitzgerald had with socialite Ginevra King, and the elite parties he attended on Long Island’s North Shore in 1922.  

The Great Gatsby received mostly favorable and positive reviews, especially its enthralling book cover. However, some literary critics believed it did not equal Fitzgerald’s previous efforts.

Critics said the novel was a commercial disappointment when compared to his previous works as it sold fewer than 20,000 copies by October, and Fitzgerald’s hopes of a monetary windfall from the novel were unrealized. When the author died in 1940, he believed himself to be a failure and his work forgotten.
