William Love, a patient at the Warren Clinic, was shot dead along with three others at the St. Francis Hospital campus in Tulsa, Oklahoma, on Wednesday.
Tulsa Police Chief Wendell Franklin said that Love helped other patients escape the attack.
“I do know that the patient victim held a door closed, I believe, is the information that I have, to allow someone to escape out of another door,” he said.
Offering condolences to his family, Dr. Ryan Parker, the associate chief medical officer at Saint Francis, said, “To the family of Mr. Love I’m so sorry we couldn’t save you. When I woke this morning, I really just wanted this to all be a bad dream, but this is the reality of our world right now.”

The gunman, identified by authorities as Michael Lewis, opened fire at St. Francis Hospital campus. Deputies with the Tulsa Police Department responded to the campus around 4.55 pm after receiving reports about an active shooter.
Four victims, including two doctors, succumbed to gunshot injuries. The gunman died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The victims have been identified as Dr. Preston Phillips, Dr. Stephanie Husen, Amanda Glenn, and William Love. Glenn was a receptionist.
Dr. Phillips is an orthopedic surgeon who graduated from Harvard Medical School in 1990. The doctor reportedly conducted a back surgery on Lewis last month. The suspect was in pain after the surgery and opened fire at the hospital on Wednesday with an intention to kill the doctor and all those who came in his way. Authorities said he purchased a semi-automatic rifle from a local gun store just hours before the shooting.
