Why not, says Aamir Khan on idea of Oscar-nominated Lagaan being remade

Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan, also known as ‘Mr. Perfectionist’, played one of his iconic roles in the 2001 film ‘ Lagaan’, a film that has completed 20 years of its release. The 56-year-old was not only the lead actor but was also stepping into production for the first time hence he had double responsibility.

The actor said that the movie was ‘such a prep-heavy film that neither Ashu (Ashutosh Gowarikar- the director of the film) nor I had the time to sit and discuss my character at length.”

“So literally, the last day I said, ‘You’ve spent time with all other actors, mere saath ek bar bhi nahi baitha. You’re just assuming that I would do it right’. So, we didn’t really prepare together,” he told Hindustan Times.

The film tells a story about a farmer named Bhuvan (played by Aamir) who accepts the challenge of Captain Andrew Russell to beat his team in a game of cricket and enable his village to not pay taxes for the next three years.

It went on to become a cult classic and was even nominated for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 74th Academy Awards.

20 years later if any filmmaker plans to remake the film, Aamir says he has no problem.

“Why not? I’m not possessive about these things,” prompt comes the reply from Khan, and he continues, “If another creative team wants to do so, I’d not stop anyone. I’d say make a better one than what we did and maybe we’d learn from them of whatever we missed. I have no problem. In fact, I’d find it interesting to see how they make Lagaan in today’s times and how would Bhuvan do his part,” he said.
