There is a 5-second rule that allows you to eat food that has fallen to the ground. The rule says you can eat food off the floor within five seconds of the time it fell because there is less chance of microorganisms transferring to the food.

Experts have experimented with this rule and concluded that it is safe depending on the food and the surface it has fallen on.

Rutgers researchers have found that there are three factors that contribute to the degree of contamination: moisture, the type of surface, contact time on the ground.

Their study says:

– A food item with more moisture is more likely to contaminate quickly. Experts have experimented with watermelon. Due to its level of moisture, it can contaminate immediately.

– Coming to the surface, experts have discovered that carpets have a very low transfer rate, and surfaces like tiles, stainless steel, and wood have a higher rate of transfer.

– In some cases, the bacteria can transfer to the food in less than one second.

But, young children, older adults, pregnant women, and people with low immune systems should be careful because if bacteria enters the body, their health might be at risk. In such cases, it is advised to toss the food. The researchers have concluded that when in doubt, toss the food.
