Green Fungus cases reported in Madhya Pradesh: Know what it is

A COVID-19 survivor in Madhya Pradesh has been infected with Green Fungus, head of the Department of Chest Diseases, Sri Aurobindo Institute of Medical Sciences (SAIMS) said Tuesday, as per PTI reports. The 34-year-old was shifted to Mumbai for treatment. This is possibly the first reported case in the country, the doctor added. 

Dr Dosi added that the person had recovered from COVID-19 and underwent a test on suspicion that he had contracted the dreaded Black Fungus infection (mucormycosis). However, tests revealed that he had contracted Green Fungus.

“He was found to have green fungus (Aspergillosis) infection in his sinuses, lungs and blood. More research was needed on whether the nature of green fungus infection in people who have recovered from COVID-19 is different from other patients,” Dr Dosi said.

What is Green Fungus?

Aspergillosis or the Green Fungus is a relatively uncommon infection and affects the lungs, PTI reports. It affected the patient’s lungs, sinuses and blood, Dr Dosi told PTI. Severe nose bleeding and fever are some of the symptoms observed in the patient. According to Dr Dosi, more research is needed on whether the nature of green fungus infection in people who have recovered from COVID-19 is different from other patients.
