Andrew Cuomo, born in 1957, the 56th governor of the state of New York tendered his resignation on Tuesday over a barrage of sexual harassment allegations. He has been polished with his family’s experience in American politics while making his way to the big leagues in the Democratic Party.

The 63-year-old has also had substantial exposure in the field of public service by serving as the Secretary of Housing and Urban Development under former US President Bill Clinton, who served for two terms.

Prior to his life as a public servant, Cuomo, the son of Mario Cuomo — a former governor of the state of New York himself– pursued his graduation from Fordham University and went on to Albany Law School to complete his education.

In 1984, Cuomo took the first step towards his time in American politics by becoming the assistant district attorney of Manhattan, New York City. A few years later, in 1993, he was selected by the Clinton administration to serve as the assistant secretary in the Housing and Urban Development Department and later moved up the ladder as the Secretary in Clinton’s second term.

After being out of the spotlight for a few years, Cuomo made a comeback in 2006 to run for the position of New York Attorney General and swept the elections against Jeanine Pirro.

Four years later, Cuomo ran for the state’s Governor’s office and challenged Carl Paladino, in Republican counterpart and once again secured the elections for himself with a significant margin to become the 56th governor of New York.

Cuomo, who has often been accused of not aligning himself with the policies of the Democratic party and following his own agendas, won the two following elections, in 2014 and 2018, and retained his position as the state’s governor. He will be up for re-election next year.
