With 6,148 deaths, India records world’s highest single-day COVID fatalities

India recorded the world’s highest single-day COVID fatalities with 6,148 deaths in the last 24 hours, data from the Union Health Ministry released on Thursday confirmed. This comes a day after Bihar revised its total death toll by 72%, increasing it from just under 5,500 to 9,429 on Wednesday. 

The country also recorded 94,052 new infections, with the total caseload and death toll now standing at 29,183,121 and 359,676 respectively.

There are a total of 1,167,952 active cases in the country. 151,367 patients recovered from the infection in the last 24 hours, taking the total number of recoveries to 27,655,493. 

According to data from the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), 20,04,690 samples were tested in the last 24 hours, taking the total number of samples tested to 372,198,253. 

India began its mass vaccination campaign on January 16, with a total of 242,726,693 people having received at least one dose of the vaccine.
