Assam jolted by 3 back-to-back earthquakes, tremors felt in Bengal, Meghalaya

A 6.4 earthquake, one of three back-to-back quakes, hit Assam’s Sonitpur on Wednesday, reported PTI.
“An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.4 on the Richter Scale hit Sonitpur, Assam today at 7:51 AM”, news agency ANI quoted the National Center for Seismology as saying.

Reportedly, tremors were felt in North Bengal and Meghalaya as well.
The first quake was followed by two smaller quakes of 4.3 and 4.4 respectively at 7:58 and 8:01 am, PTI referred to concerned officials as saying.
The earthquake struck 96 km north-east of Guwahati, said a tweet by European Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC).
“Just experienced a massive earthquake in Assam. Waiting for details”, tweeted Minister Hemanta Biswa Sarma, confirming in a later tweet that the epicentre was Dhekiajuli in Sonitpur district.
“Big earthquake hits Assam. I pray for the well being of all and urge everyone to stay alert. Taking updates from all districts. #earthquake“, tweeted Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal.
