Russia, the largest country in the world having territory measuring 17,125,192 sq. kilometres, has eleven time zones that observe timing ranging from Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) + 2.00 to UTC + 12.00.
The country’s western-most timezone is Kaliningrad Time, that is 2 hours ahead of UTC and one hour behind Moscow Time.
Moscow Time is the country’s second time zone that is 3 hours ahead of UTC. Moscow Time is followed in the west of country, including, as the name suggests, in the capital.
Then, from west to east are Samara Time, Yekaterinburg Time, Omsk Time, Krasnoyarsk Time, Irkutsk Time, Yakutsk Time, Vladivostok Time, and Magadan Time, respectively, with the final, eastern-most time zone being Kamchatka Time that is 12 hours ahead of UTC and 9 hours ahead of Moscow Time.
Among the 11 time zones in Russia, a majority of the Russian population follow Moscow Time: as of 2020, as many as 90,155,502 people in Russia lived in the capital’s time zone. The second-most followed time zone in Russia is Yekaterinburg Time, which, as of 2020, was followed by as many as 20,954,998. Kamchatka Time, meanwhile, is the least followed time in Russia, with only 363,304 under the time zone.
While Russia had been following daylight saving time (DST) since 1981, it was discontinued in 2014 after a change in law.
