Amazon Daily Quiz (February 17, 2022): Kano Jigoro Shihan was the founder of which Japanese martial art, that was the first martial art to become an official sport here?
A. Taekwondo
B. Karate
C. Judo
D. Aikido
Answer: Judo
Judo is a Japanese martial arts form which has been an Olympic sport, since 1964. It was created as an eclectic martial art by Jigoro Kano in 1882. It has two primary differences from its predecessors the Tenjin Shinyo-ryu jujutsu and Kito-ryu jujutsu – one being the emphasis of ‘randori’ or free sparring instead of ‘kata’ or pre-arranged forms and the other being striking and weapon training elements.
Judo philosophy revolves around two primary principles – that of ‘Seiryoku-Zenyo’ or maximum utilisation of energy and ‘Jita-Kyoei’ or mutual welfare and benefit.
Judo was the first Japanese martial art form to gain prominence worldwide and the first to become an Olympic sport. Innovations attributed to Kanō include the use of black and white belts, and the introduction of dan ranking to show the relative ranking among members of a martial art style.
