Attorney General of India K. K. Venugopal has given consent for
contempt proceeding against a cartoonist who in one of her cartoons depicted
Supreme Court of India and Arnab Goswami in a relation which the top lawyer
found fit to take exception against.

Rachita Taneja posted the cartoon from her Twitter handle ‘Sanitary Panels’, which has a following of over 15,000 accounts on the site.

She had posted the cartoon on Twitter on November 12, a day after Goswami was granted an interim
bail by the apex court in an abetment to suicide case in Maharashtra.

According to a report in Bar &Bench, the petition to
initiate contempt proceeding was filed by one Aditya Kashyap.

The cartoon in contention depicts a caricature of Republic
TV Editor Arnab Goswami along with caricatures of Supreme Court and BJP, with a
caption “Tu Janta Nahi Mera Baap Kaun Hai” (Don’t you know, who my father is!) –
an oft-heard refrain among people ready to show off their clout.

The petition by Kashyap carried other similar cartoons by Taneja,
in one of which she depicted the top court as ‘Sanghi Court of India”.

“I am satisfied that each of the tweets with cartoons
attached is in contempt of the Supreme Court of India, hence I grant my
consent,” Venugopal noted as he assented to the petition.
