Head and Warner’s record-breaking opening partnership

It is safe to say that Australia has found its opening pairing for next year’s World Cup in India. Travis Head and David Warner combined for a record-breaking 269-run opening partnership on November 22 at the MCG against England.

It was the highest opening partnership in ODI history at the MCG and Australia’s second-largest opening partnership in the 50-over format. England captain Jos Buttler won the toss and chose to bat first in Melbourne.

It was a tense start for Head, who edged a delivery through the slips during the Powerplay and successfully overturned an LBW decision after Hawkeye replays revealed the ball pitched outside leg stump. He was at the score of 9.

However, once the white Kookaburra had stopped swinging, it was all one-way traffic. Australia finished the Powerplay at 0/64, rarely offering chances once the fielding restrictions were lifted. Head and Warner smacked anything overpitched or short enough to pull through mid-wicket.

Head reached the century mark in 91 deliveries before Warner followed suit, reaching the mark in 97 balls. It was Warner’s first international century since January 2020, before the Covid-19 pandemic.

After winning the first two games, the hosts have already clinched the three-match series. Australia won the first game by six wickets, and the second game by 72 runs. Steven Smith is the series’ leading run-scorer with 185 runs, while Adam Zampa is the series’ leading wicket-taker with 7 wickets.
