Ben Stokes replies to Virat Kohli’s comment on his retirement post

England cricketer Ben Stokes on Monday (July 18) declared his intention to retire from ODIs, citing that ‘three formats are unsustainable for him to play’. He played is last ODI at the County Durham’s Riverside Stadium.

Former Indian skipper Virat Kohli gave his best wishes to the English allrounder and commented,” You’re the most competitive bloke I’ve ever played against. Respect.”
Before his last ODI match, Stokes gave an emotional interview to former England player Nasser Hussain on Sky Sports. When asked by Hussain about Kohli’s comment, Stokes replied, “Yes, it is very nice to hear what Virat Kohli said.”

He further added, “Virat Kohli is a phenomenal player. The energy and the commitment that Virat Kohli gives to the game is something I have always really admired even before I started playing against him. I love every single time I have played against him.”
When asked about his farewell game, he replied,” It’s amazing. You look at things like this and it’s almost meant to be. I’ve only played two games here for England so it’s a special feeling. When I spoke to Jos (Buttler) and Motty (Matthews Potts) and asked if they wouldn’t mind, they were amazing and just said ‘absolutely’. What an amazing day to have. Durham gave me my first opportunity. Without Durham, I wouldn’t be sat here talking to you now.”

Earlier in the game, South Africa won the toss and decided to bat first. Ben Stokes was the first person to enter the field, with the whole stadium erupting in applause.
The decision is proving to be sound for the visitors as the have amassed 297 runs in 46 overs. Aiden Makram and Rassie vander Dussen’s 151 run partnership deflated England’s bowling attack. Eventually both got out in the same over of part timer Livingstone, with van der Dussen making 133 and Makram making 77.
