Centre to include transgender prisoners as separate category in prison statistics reports

The National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) on Monday informed the Delhi High Court that it has agreed to include transgender as a separate category in the gender classification of prisoners in their annual publication of prison statistics 2020, PTI reported.
The Centre further told the court that a communication has been issued to all the states and union territories.

The step came after a public suit was filed against the authority in the court to recognise and classify transgenders as a separate gender in their annual publication of prison statistics.
The submission was made before a bench of Chief Justice DN Patel and Justice Prateek Jalan by Additional Solicitor General (ASG) Chetan Sharma.
The Centre’s responded to the court’s query on December 1 as to what steps it has taken for including data of transgender prisoners in its latest prison statistics reports.
