Cyclone Yash may hit Bengal coast on May 24, bring heavy rains: Report

West Bengal, after being ravaged by super cyclone Amphan in
2020, is likely to witness another cyclone, ‘Yash’, next week. The cyclone is
likely to form in a low-pressure area created over East-central Bay of Bengal
and is expected to make landfall on May 24, as per a report from The Free Press
Journal.

“Through Sunderbans the cyclone is likely to enter bringing
high to very high rainfall in parts of South Bengal. Through West Bengal the
cyclone Yash is likely to go towards Bangladesh. However, the actual movement
of the cyclone can be monitored only before 48 hours of the development,” the report
quoted Met office sources as saying.

The Regional Meteorological Department (RMD), however, noted
that it is too early to predict anything regarding the development, since it
would take some time for the low pressure to take a shape.

Super cyclone Amphan had made landfall in West Bengal during
the COVID-19 induced lockdown in May 19, 2020, wreaking havoc in the South 24
Parganas district as well as other areas in West Bengal after entering the
state through the Sundarbans.

Reportedly, the RMD further noted that Southern Bengal, for
now, will be witnessing ‘extremely hot’ temperature, possibly hovering around
40 degrees Celsius, whereas Kolkata will be seeing a maximum temperature of 39
degrees Celsius.
