Daler Mehndi, the well-known Punjabi singer, was sentenced to two years in prison in a 2003 human trafficking case. A Patiala court rejected Daler Mehndi’s appeal against his two-year prison sentence and Mehndi was arrested on Thursday.
Mehndi is credited with popularising Bhangra in India. Mehndi started his career in 1995 and has chalked through three decades in the music industry.
Talking about his career, Mehndi told Hindustan Times -“Bollywood stars have a whole team behind them to make them popular, but Daler Mehndi is a name which has reached all across the world without any team working on it. Recently, a BTS member also shared about singing my songs while growing up. I feel very happy and proud reading about it.”

‘Tunak Tunak Tun’
‘Tunak Tunak Tun’ is a 1998 Bhangra/Indi-pop song. It was the first chroma key music video produced in India. The song and video were huge hits, upholding Mehndi’s position as the country’s biggest and most popular popstar at the time. It later achieved international acclaim and a cult following, particularly after it became an internet meme in the 2000s.

‘Bolo Ra Ra Ra’
Mehndi’s debut album, Bolo Ta Ra Ra, sold over 20 million copies. The album launched Daler’s career as a pop star, and it also earned him Channel V’s Best Indian Male Pop Artist Award.

‘Rang De Basanti’
A. R. Rahman created the soundtrack for the 2006 movie Rang De Basanti, and Prasoon Joshi and rapper Blaaze wrote the lyrics, which were released by Sony Music Entertainment on December 25, 2005. According to the Indian trade website Box Office India, with approximately 19,00,000 units sold, this film’s soundtrack album was the third best-selling album of the year.
