Terrorism has wreaked havoc on nations all over the world, with India bearing the brunt of the damage more often than not.

Here is a list of the six worst terrorist attacks that India has experienced, all of which resulted in significant casualties:

Bombay Blasts of 1993

On March 12, 1993, 13 explosions occurred around India’s financial hub Mumbai. In one of the largest organised terror attacks in Indian territory, around 260 people were killed and well over 700 were injured. The first explosion occurred around 1:30 am in the Bombay Stock Exchange building, followed by a series of vehicle and scooter bombings that occurred at regular intervals throughout the city during the next two hours.

2001 Parliament Attack

On December 13, 2001, five Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) and Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) terrorists stormed the Indian Parliament, resulting in a 45-minute gun battle in which nine police officers and parliament staffers were killed. Terrorists dressed in commando uniforms entered Parliament in automobiles bearing Ministry stickers through the building’s VIP gate.

As a result of the strike, India and Pakistan were locked in a military standoff. Both nuclear-armed countries deployed large numbers of armed soldiers along the Line of Control in Kashmir.

2006 Mumbai Train Bombing

On July 11, a succession of seven bomb attacks in Mumbai’s Suburban Railways lasted 11 minutes. The explosions claimed the lives of 209 people and injured nearly 700 others. In pressure cookers, the bombs were detonated.

26/11 Mumbai attack in 2008

Another coordinated attack against the country’s financial capital occurred in 2008. Ten LeT terrorists from Pakistan carried out 12 synchronised shooting and bombing strikes across the city over the course of four days. At least 174 people were killed, with more than 300 others injured.

2016 Uri Attack

In 2016, four heavily armed terrorists attacked the 12 Brigade headquarters of the Indian Army in Uri, Jammu & Kashmir. It was “the bloodiest attack on security troops in Kashmir in two decades,” according to reports, with 18 soldiers slain. Surgical strikes targeting terror launchpads on and along the Line of Control were carried out by the Indian Army over ten days after the incident (LoC).

2019 Pulwama Attack

At least 44 CPRF personnel were murdered and another 20 were injured in one of the bloodiest terror strikes on security forces when a JeM terrorist rammed an explosive-laden SUV into a convoy of vehicles in J&K’s Pulwama area.

In the early hours of February 26, some 12 days after the incident, IAF jets targeted the JeM camp in Balakot, in Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa area, killing hundreds of militants.
