Cloudburst in Jammu and Kashmir kills at least 5, over 25 missing

At least five people were killed and over 25 people are reported missing after a cloudburst occurred on Wednesday in a remote village in the Kishtwar district of Jammu and Kashmir, reported news agency PTI.

However, according to news agency ANI, over 30-40 people are still missing while rescue operations are underway with the help of SDRF and the Indian Army.

Union Minister Jitendra Singh also tweeted about the tragedy.

Rescue teams were rushed to Honzar village of Dacchan tehsil and operations are being conducted while further details are awaited.

Indian Air Force authorities have also been contacted for lifting the injured in incidents related to the cloudburst in Kishtwar, reported news agency ANI quoting J-K deputy commissioner.

Most parts of the territory have been affected following heavy rains that are going on fr the past few days now. IMD has predicted more rains in the region till July-end, authorities in Kishtwar have asked people living along water bodies and slide-prone areas to remain vigilant.

“The meteorological department has predicted heavy rains during the upcoming days and water levels in rivers and nallas are expected to rise, which can pose a threat to the inhabitants residing near rivers, nallas, water bodies and slide-prone areas,” the district administration said in an advisory issued late on Tuesday night.
