India penalised for slow-over rate in Test against South Africa

For sustaining a sluggish over-rate against South Africa in the first Test at Centurion, the triumphant Indian cricket team was penalised 20% of its match money on Friday.

India will also be docked one point in the ICC Men’s World Test Championship as a result of the infraction, according to the ICC.

The fine was handed by Andrew Pycroft of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees after India fell one over short of the objective when time allowances were taken into account.

Players are penalised 20% of their match fees for each over if their team fails to bowl in the permitted time, according to Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which deals with minimum over-rate violations, said the ICC in a statement.

Furthermore, according to Article 16.11 of the ICC Men’s World Test Championship Playing Conditions, a team is docked one point for each over they fail to complete.

There was no need for a formal hearing because Captain Virat Kohli pleaded guilty to the offence and accepted the recommended sentence.

The allegation was levelled by umpires Marais Erasmus, Adrian Holdstock, Allahudien Paleker, and Bongani Jele.

On Thursday, India triumphed by 113 runs at the SuperSport Park to grab a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.

The Indian cricket team romped to an impressive 113-run win in the 1st Test, taking a 1-0 lead in the three-match series and kick-starting the South African tour on a winning note. In the process, the tourists also scripted history with their first-ever win at the Centurion.

Indian pacer Mohammed Shami took his 200th Test wicket during this match and was lauded for his wonderful feat.
