India’s daily cases drop below 2 lakh, 1192 deaths in last 24 hours

India’s daily cases reported 1,67,059 new COVID-19 cases, 1192 deaths and 2,54,076 recoveries in the last 24 hours, according to data updated by the health ministry on Tuesday.
Active cases are now 17,43,059, comprising 4.20% of the total COVID tally.
With this, the daily positivity rate has fallen from 15.77% to 11.69%.
A total of 1,66,68,48,204 COVID vaccine doses have been administered so far. The nation’s mass vaccination campaign was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on January 16 last year.

Meanwhile, the Election Commission of India extended the ban on rallies and processions till February 11, ahead of the assembly elections in five states.
Health minister Mansukh Mandiaviya said on Sunday that more than 75% of the eligible population in the country is fully vaccinated. “With the mantra of ‘Sabka Saath, Sabka Prayas’, India has achieved the target of 75% of its adult population being administered both doses of the vaccine. We are getting stronger in the fight against the coronavirus. We have to follow all the rules and get the vaccine as soon as possible,” he tweeted in Hindi.

Meanwhile, omicron is now the dominant variant behind COVID-19 cases in the country, the government said in a press conference last week.
India’s COVID-19 tally had crossed the 20,00,000 mark on August 7, 2020, 30,00,000 on August 23, 40,00,000 on September 5 and 50,00,000 on September 16. It went past 60,00,000 on September 28, 70,00,000 on October 11, crossed 80 lakh on October 29, 90,00,000 on November 20 and surpassed the one-crore mark on December 19.
India crossed the grim milestone of two crore on May 4 and three crore on June 23.
