An instruction is given to all the eight playing teams and match officials in IPL 2021 by the Board of Cricket for Council in India (BCCI) about the slow over-rate. According to BCCI’s code of conduct, a team should complete its 20 overs in one and a half hours or 90 mins.

The penalty for the first time offence is a fine of Rs 12 lakh and if the same mistake is repeated within the next two games, the team skipper is designated as a ‘repeat offender’, who face a ban for two to four matches, with the match referree deciding the degree of penalty.

The cricket board has taken all the reasonable measures into consideration which are beyond the control of the fielding side before charging a fine against the team.

They include time lost as a result of treatment given to a player by an authorised medial personnel, time lost due to a player leaving the field of play as a result of an injury, time taken for third umpire referrals and other player reviews, etc.

CSK will take on the Punjab Kings in their second game at the Wankhede Stadium tonight and Dhoni will have to be extra careful that his team finish their designated overs within the stipulated time.
