Punjab Kings won a thrilling contest at
the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Monday as they defeated Chennai Super Kings
by 11 runs. 27 required off the last over, Rishi Dhawan, the man who bowled wearing
a faceguard and took two important wickets of Shivam Dube and MS Dhoni, conceded 15 runs to steer PBKS to a morale-boosting victory after Shikhar Dhawan scored a half-century.

Dhoni started with a six before Rishi Dhawan bowled a
wide in the second ball and conceded no run in the repeat delivery. In the
third ball, he had Dhoni caught by Jonny
Bairstow
to dent CSK’s chance in the match.

20 required off 3 balls, Jadeja could
only smash a six.

Ambati Rayudu’s 39-ball 78 not enough for CSK

Chasing a stiff 188 runs target, CSK
lost Robin Uthappa early and lost two more wickets to get reduced to 40 for 3
in 7 overs. Ruturaj Gaikwad (30) and Ambati Rayudu (78) built a 49 runs
partnership to bring CSK back in the game. Rayudu was more aggressive as the
right-handed batter hit six sixes and seven boundaries during his 39-ball innings. He shared another 64
runs partnership with Ravindra Jadeja (21 not out). But his lone effort was not
enough for CSK.

Rayudu was eventually dismissed by
Kagiso Rabada who uprooted his stumps in the 18th over to give a blow to CSK’s
chase.

After his dismissal, the Yellow Brigade found
themselves needing 27 runs to win in the 20th over. But Rishi Dhawan’s tight
bowling took PBKS home while CSK suffered their sixth defeat in IPL 2022

Dhawan anchors PBKS innings, Livingstone plays a little cameo

Earlier, CSK captain Jadeja won the toss
and asked Punjab Kings to bat first. Shikhar Dhawan struck his second fifty of
the season to power Punjab Kings to 187 for 4.

The 36-year-old left-handed batter anchored
the PBKS innings with a brilliant 88 not out and built a 110-run partnership
for the second wicket with Sri Lankan Bhanuka Rajapaksa (42) after captain
Mayank Agarwal’s early dismissal.

Dhawan hit nine fours and two sixes in
his 59-ball innings. He, meanwhile, became the second cricketer to score 6000 runs in
IPL after Virat Kohli.

On a slow pitch, Dhawan got ample
support from Rajapaksa, who scored 42 from 32 balls with the help of two fours
and as many sixes as the duo frustrated the CSK bowlers for a long stretch in
the innings.

Later in the innings, Liam Livingstone,
who was bought for Rs 11.5 crore in the IPL auction, played a little cameo of
19 runs off seven balls with the help of four and two sixes towards the end to
swell the Punjab total as PBKS post 187 for 4 in 20 overs.

After Monday’s win, PBKS are sixth on
the points table with eight points.
