6 dead, several injured in electric bus accident in Kanpur

At least six people were killed and several others injured in an electric bus accident in Uttar Pradesh’s Kanpur on Sunday night. Police said the incident took place near Tat Mill cross road. 

Four of the deceased were identified, as per Amar Ujala. The police were making efforts to identify the others killed in the east Kanpur accident. The injured, at least nine, were admitted to nearby hospitals while further details were awaited.

As per local media reports, the accident took place around 11:30 PM. An electric bus was moving at high speed from Ghantaghar to Tat Mill when the driver of the bus lost control of the wheels. As soon as the bridge at the busy intersection descended, the driver started running in the opposite direction and knocked down a traffic booth, uprooted it. The vehicle then collided with a dumper, as per Amar Ujala, and two cars.

Tat Mill crossing is situated near the Inter-state bus terminal. It is close to the railway station and thus remains busy with vehicular traffic and people on foot.

Amar Ujala report identifies three of the deceased as Shubham Sonkar (30), resident of Latush Road, his friend Sunil Sonkar (30) and Ramesh Yadav, who were on a scooty. The report further adds that Aslan (20), a resident of Bekenganj, riding a bike and Ajit Kumar (60), a resident of Keshav Nagar in Naubasta, also died.

Family members of a Dhankutti resident, returing from a wedding, were injured.

The bus driver, as per reports, fled as soon as the accident took place. He has not been found since. 

“The bodies of the dead have been sent to the mortuary. The injured are being treated in the hospital. The bus driver is absconding. Search for him is going on. Initial investigation found the fault of the bus driver. The facts will be clear after the rest of the investigation,” Pramod Kumar, DCP East said, as per Amar Ujala.
