Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh met Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray on Monday to tender his resignation. His resignation is yet to be accepted, ANI reported, quoting NCP leader Nawab Malik.

This comes after the Bombay High Court ordered the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to conduct a preliminary inquiry within 15 days into corruption allegations levelled by former Mumbai commissioner Param Bir Singh against him.

Singh had submitted a PIL saying that Deshmukh had asked police officer Sachin Waze, who is now suspended, to collect Rs 100 crore from bars, hotels and restaurants in Mumbai monthly.

Malik told reporters, “Deshmukh informed NCP chief Sharad Pawar that it won’t be appropriate to remain in the post as CBI will be probing the charges against him.”

Deshmukh in his resignation letter said that he does not find it morally correct to continue as the state home minister after the court’s order.

State BJP chief Chandrakant Patil said he is happy that Deshmukh has quit, adding there will be many “shocking revelations” in the CBI probe.
