The
most recent on the list of nations to initiate vaccination drive against
COVID-19 is Mexico. On Thursday, the Latin American nation started the programme with a nurse named Maria Irene Ramirez being the first to take a jab in the country with one of the world’s highest COVID-19
death tolls, reported AFP.

“It’s
the best gift I could receive in 2020. It
makes me safer and gives me more courage to continue the war against an
invisible enemy. We’re afraid but we must continue,” said 59-year-old Maria.

The television
broadcast of the first vaccination came a day after 3,000 doses produced by
US pharmaceutical giant, Pfizer and its German partner BioNTech arrived Mexico
by courier plane from Belgium.

According to AFP, the
first batch of drugs which being guarded by the military to prevent
them falling into criminals’ hands, will be primarily administered to front line medical
personnel.

On the other hand to combat the danger of sudden spike in cases being recorded in the country, Mexico announced a fresh set of restrictions the other week, barring all the non essential activities.

Mexico has recorded more than 120,000 COVID-19 deaths and around 1.35 million infections and is the world’s
fourth country with highest death toll after the United States, Brazil and India.
