Mumbai fire: PM Modi announces ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakhs each to families of victims

Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced on Saturday an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakhs each from Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF) to the kin of those who lost their lives in the building fire in Tardeo, Mumbai.
The injured would be given Rs 50,000, the Prime Minister’s Office said.
The fire on the 19th floor of the Sachinam Heights building located opposite Bhatia Hospital at Gowalia Tank of Central Mumbai killed at least six persons and injured 23.
Maharashtra cabinet minister Aaditya Thackeray also announced that the government will give 5 lakh ex-gratia to families of those who lost lives in the fire accident.
According to an official of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, the blaze erupted around 7 am in the residential Tardeo’s Kamla building on Saturday morning, reported PTI.

Talking about the incident, the civic official said, “It is a ground plus 20-storey building. The fire broke out on its 19th floor. On being alerted, the fire brigade personnel and police rushed the spot. Several persons were rescued, of them 29 were taken to different nearby hospitals as some of them were injured, while others complained of health problems, like suffocation.”
Five of the seven injured who were rushed to the Nair Hospital died, while another lost his life while at Kasturba Hospital. 17 injured people were admitted to Bhatia hospital, 12 out of whom are still undergoing treatment and are in critical condition. Five were discharged.

The reason behind the blaze is still being ascertained, according to the official.
“The fire incident that occured at the Kamala building in Mumbai’s Tardeo area will be investigated. Our guardian of Mumbai, Suburban Aaditya Thackeray and Mumbai city guardian minister Aslam Shaikh will look into it,” Maharashtra Deputy CM Ajit Pawar said after the incident.
