Mumbai Mayor Kishori Pednekar hinted towards the introduction of fresh restrictions in the city amid a record surge in COVID-19 cases recently. Mumbai has been the centre of a sharp spike in infections recently, reporting its highest daily rise in fresh cases since the onset of the pandemic last year.

On Thursday, the city reported a record 8,646 new coronavirus cases, taking its total caseload to 4,23,360, behind only the national capital’s tally of 6,65,220. However, it has the highest death toll among Indian cities, with 18 deaths on Thursday taking that tally to 11,704.

Pednekar said that hotels in the city could be asked to operate at 50%, while religious places could be shut entirely because “people do not listen”, PTI reported.

“Train journey might be restricted to only essential services staff only as in the past,” she said, adding that malls and theatres could also be shut, as people do not follow health-safety protocols.
