Power restored in Mumbai hours after sudden outage, train services partially resume

Power services slowly restored in Mumbai after a sudden outage brought the commercial capital of India to a grinding halt. Train services, too, were hit as pictures of passengers waiting in a queue on railway platforms started circulating on social media. Pictures of people walking on railway tracks to reach their destination were also shared.

Talking about the power outage, Maharashtra’s Power Minister Nitin Raut, in a video statement, said maintenance work was on in Maharashtra State Electricity Transmission Company’s 400 kv Kalwa-Padgha centre when the technical fault happened in circuit number 2, which was taking the entire load at the time.

“A major part of Mumbai and Thane has been affected due to this, power will be restored in 30-45 minutes,” he continued.

“Trains between CSMT-Panvel on Harbour Line have resumed. We’re trying to restore services between CSMT-Kalyan, CSMT-Karjat/Kasara. Long-distance trains from Mumbai rescheduled, and incoming trains regulated at interchange points,” news agency quoted CPRO, Central Railway, as saying.

“At 10.10 am there were simultaneous substation tripping in MSETCL’s Kalwa, Kharghar causing a huge dip in frequency in Mumbai transmission system which led to tripping of power supply. Restoration work in progress to bring supply from the 3 Hydro units & Trombay units,” Tata Power said in a statement.
