Dhawan, Rohit closing in on this Tendulkar-Ganguly record in ODIs
- Shikhar Dhawan and Rohit Sharma crossed 5,000 partnership runs in ODIs
- They also brought up their 17th 100+ opening partnership in ODIs
- In the 3rd ODI against England, the duo put together a 103-run opening stand
India’s veteran openers Shikhar Dhawan and Rohit Sharma are often compared to ‘Jai and Veeru’ from the classic Bollywood film ‘Sholay’ because of their long-running successful partnership at the top of the order. And the pair joined an elite club in ODI cricket by becoming only the seventh pair to cross the 5,000-mark in partnership runs during the third and final ODI against England.
And while ‘Gabbar’ and ‘Hitman’ are a long way off the record for partnership runs between two batsmen, held by former Indian batsmen Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly – at 8,227 – they are closing in on another record held by the legendary duo.
Dhawan and Rohit notched their 17th 100+ opening partnership during the encounter at Pune’s Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium, surpassing Australian duo Adam Gilchrist and Matthew Hayden’s record. They are now just four short of the all-time record held by Tendulkar and Ganguly.
