Six-star Jasprit Bumrah joins elite list with 1st ODI show vs England
- Bumrah's spell reduced them to just 30/5 after 10 overs
- England have set India a target of 111 to chase in 50 overs
- This is now England's lowest ODI total vs India
India and England have locked horns at the Oval for the first of the three-match ODI series. The visiting bowling attack crushed the famed English batting lineup. And the destructor in chief was none other than Jasprit Bumrah.
The fast bowler wreaked havoc through England’s top order and reduced them to just 30/5 after 10 overs of the powerplay. After England was 90/8, Rohit Sharma introduced him back to finish up the tail. His MI teammate did just that, taking both the wickets and ending the innings with his career-best spell 7.2-3-19-6. This was just his second fifer in ODIs.

With this excellent spell, the Mumbai Indians stalwart has etched his name again in the record books. He became only the third Indian bowler to have 4 wickets to his name in the first 10 overs in an ODI since 2002. The other players in the list are J Srinath vs SL (Johannesburg, 2003) and Bhuvneshwar Kumar vs SL (Port of Spain, 2013).
The bowler’s magical spell began in the second over. After bowling three terrific deliveries, Bumrah bowled Roy after tempting him with a beautiful slightly wide delivery outside off the stumps. Roy tried a cover drive but got an inside edge that broke the stumps.
It’s the next delivery that rattles England. Root anticipated a delivery outside off and tried to remove the bat just in time, but extra bounce gives the ball an outside edge, forcing him to be dismissed. It was just the second over of the game and it was a double wicket maiden. Tornado Bumrah had just struck The Oval.

Bumrah then gave just a single run in the next over he bowled. In the next over, he again started beautifully, weaving threads around the 5th test centurion Jonny Bairstow. And he got the big fish in the net. Bairstow played with the outside edge of a short delivery that was outside off. He received substantial outside edge, and Pant being Pant pulled off another one-handed blinder to his right.
In the next over of the spell, Bumrah sent Liam Livingstone back to the pavilion for an early lunch. Livingstone came down the pitch but in return exposed all his stumps. Bumrah throws a full ball, swinging in and he was clean bowled. England were reduced to 26/5 out of which three were ducks.

After the tail began to hurt India, Rohit Sharma again bought Bumrah back into the attack. He then broke the 36 run partnership between Carse and Wiley by rattling the stumps of Carse. In the next over of his spell he clean bowled Willey and ended England’s horror show. This was his best career spell. He also became the first Indian bowler to take 6 wickets in an ODI in England. This is now England’s lowest ODI total vs India. England have set India a target of 111 to chase in 50 overs.
