Trinamool Congress on Monday took a dig at Union Home Minister and Bhartaiya Janata Party’s Amit Shah after he cancelled his first stop to West Bengal’s Jhargram as he could not reach the venue due to some technical glitch in his helicopter. The home minister delivered his speech virtually instead. Jhargram rally was a part of his election campaign scheduled for today. “I was going to come here for campaigning. Unfortunately, my helicopter was damaged and I couldn’t come to see you,” Shah said during the video speech.

Calling the ‘snag’ a cover-up to avoid the poor turnout at the rally, TMC leader and Mamata Banerjee’s nephew, Abhishek Banerjee, during his rally in west Midnapur said, “Jhargram was easily reachable by road and those who attend rallies in the heat at afternoon don’t come to hear speeches.”

He further said that tea stalls in villages have more crowd than the BJP rallies in the poll-bound state of West Bengal.

Meanwhile, veteran TMC leader Derek O’Brien also took to Twitter to share images from the BJP rally venues and said the real reason behind Amit Shah’s absence was empty chairs and poor crowd.

However, Amit Shah, who is on two-day visit to West Bengal ahead of eight-phased assembly elections, was scheduled to visit Jhargram, which can prove to be an important constituency. The reason of his visit was to launch a yatra to honour the contribution of freedom fighters like Birsa Munda and others in the fight against British rule in India.

The BJP, which is eyeing to capture Mamata Banerjee’s TMC ruled West Bengal, planned a massive rally at Jhargram.

Both the players, TMC and BJP are addressing back to back rallies to amp up its campaign as the election day is approaching.

Polling for West Bengal Assembly elections 2021 is set to begin to from March 27.
