Tokyo Olympics: Indians in the fray on Day 11

  • Indian shuttler PV Sindhu won a bronze medal on Day 10
  • Discus thrower Kamalpreet Kaur will be in action on Day 11

India finished Day 10 at the Tokyo Olympics on a high. Shuttler PV Sindhu won a women’s singles bronze whereas the men’s hockey team qualified for the semi-finals. 

Other results saw golfers Anirban Lahiri and Udayan Mane finish tied 42nd and 56th at the end of men’s individual stroke play event. Boxer Satish Kumar lost to Bakhodir Jalolov (Uzbekistan) 0-5 in men’s super heavy (+91kg) quarterfinals and equestrian Fouaad Mirza finished 22nd after cross-country round in individual eventing.

Team India will begin Day 11 in Tokyo with Dutee Chand featuring in the women’s 200m heat. Other Indians in action on August 2 are Kamalpreet Kaur (discus throw), Fouaad Mirza (Equestrian eventing individual jumping) and Sanjeev Rajput and Aishwary Pratap Singh Toma (shooting). The Indian women’s hockey team will lock horns with Australia in the quarterfinals. 

All eyes will be on India’s Kamalpreet Kaur, as she will aim at making history when she takes to the field in the women’s discus throw final. If Kaur finishes on the podium, she will become the first Indian athlete to win a track-and-field medal at the Olympics. The national record holder will compete with Olympic medallist Sandra Perkovic of Croatia, World No 1 Yaime Perez of Cuba and qualification topper Varalie Allman of the United States among others. 

India’s premier sprinter Dutee Chand will run in the heats of the women’s 200m. She had earlier been eliminated in the women’s 100m heats. 

The women’s hockey team will face the tough Australian challenge in the quarterfinals. Equestrian Fouaad Mirza and his horse Seigneur Medicott will also be in action on Day 11/.

Shooters Sanjeev Rajput and Aishwary Pratap Singh Tomar will compete in the men’s 50m rifle – the last shooting event of Tokyo 2020.

Equestrian

Eventing individual jumping final: If Fouaad Mirza qualifies – 5:15 PM IST onwards

Women’s quarter-final: India vs Australia – 8:30 AM IST

Shooting

Men’s 50m rifle 3 positions

Qualification: Sanjeev Rajput and Aishwary Pratap Singh Tomar – 8:00 AM IST
