Virat Kohli one win away from surpassing this MS Dhoni record in Tests

Indian skipper Virat Kohli goes into the third Test against England at Ahmedabad’s Motera Stadium with extra incentive, as he has a chance of overtaking Mahendra Singh Dhoni as India’s most successful captain in home matches in the format. With a mammoth 317-run victory over England in the second Test last Tuesday, Kohli equalled Dhoni’s record of 21 home wins.

After a heavy, 217-run, defeat in the opening Test at Chennai’s MA Chidambaram Stadium, Rohit Sharma’s 161 inspired India to a formidable 329-run total in the first innings.

The hosts took a 195-run lead in the first innings, after bowling out England for 134, and scored 286 in the second innings to post an impossible target of 420 runs for the Joe Root-led side. 

England were then bowled out for 164 on Day 4 as India levelled the series at 1-1. 

Apart from qualification for the upcoming World Test Championship later this year, Kohli also has the incentive of registering his 22nd home Test win in the third match against England, starting February 24. 

Overall Dhoni has 27 Test wins from 60 Tests (45%) while Kohli has won 33 matches in 55 matches (60%).

Mohammad Azharuddin (13), Sourav Ganguly (10) and Sunil Gavaskar (7) are the next in the list with most wins Test wins in India.

Meanwhile, Kohli is also just 23 runs away from surpassing Dilip Vengsarkar (3,725) as the sixth-highest Test run-scorer in India.  

Cheteshwar Pujara and Kohli are also 45 and 12 runs away from amassing 1,000 Test runs against England at home. Only Sunil Gavaskar (1,331) and Gundappa Vishwanath (1,022) have achieved that feat before.
