Watch: India celebrates Droupadi Murmu, its first tribal President

As Droupadi Murmu defeated Yashwant Sinha to become the 15th President of India, the country began celebrating her rise to the top. Murmu has also become India’s first-ever Tribal President, and is the second woman to hold the office after Pratibha Patil in 2007.
Murmu hails from the Mayurbhanj district in Odisha, where celebrations began as counting began in New Delhi. The new Indian President, who was born in Uparbeda village, had begun her political journey after she became a ward councillor in the district. She later went on to become a two-time MLA and a minister of the state government. She was later appointed as the 9th Governor of Jharkhand, and was the first woman to hold the office.

Celebrations in BJP ruled states were aplenty in India, however, commemorations were also witnessed in non-BJP ruled states. Murmu, who is part of the Santhal tribe by ethnicity, was celebrated among her tribesmates all around India.

The Nagaland unit of BJP shared videos of the celebrations on their Twitter handle, showing a procession with drums and a huge banner with the new Indian President’s photo.
State vice-president of BJP’s Karnataka unit, Nirmal Kumar Surana, shared some photos of the celebrations in the southern Indian state. The photos showed BJP workers celebrating Murmu’s victory with flowers and placards with her face on it.
The BJP Mumbai Mahila Morcha shared a video of many of its workers during a procession with dhols at the BJP headquarter in Dadar, commemorating Droupadi Murmu’s victory in the Presidential election.
Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan’s residence in New Delhi showcased an Odia cultural dance to celebrate Murmu’s rise to power.

The BJP Tribe Morcha in Bihar posted a video on Twitter, showcasing a tribal dance in celebration of Droupadi Murmu’s victory.
