West Bengal lockdown extended till June 15: What’s open, closed

  • Lockdown in West Bengal was supposed to end on May 30
  • The lockdown has been imposed since April 30
  • West Bengal reported 16,225 COVID-19 cases on Wednesday

The West Bengal government on Thursday decided to extend the restrictions in the state till June 15, PTI reports. Transport services, including metros, will remain closed. Educational institutes and offices will also remain shut.

Although Mamata Banerjee refused to use the terms lockdown and curfew, the restrictions will shut down several services from parlours to sports complexes.

“The COVID-19 restrictions in the state will continue till June 15. This is not a lockdown or a curfew. We will strictly follow the restrictions. It’s a relief to see that the ongoing restrictions have helped in easing the situation a little,” Banerjee said as per PTI reports

“We will see that the state’s economy is not disturbed,” she added.

The State government had imposed a lockdown on April 30. It was supposed to end on May 30.

What services remain shut and in West Bengal?

As per Section 22 of the Disaster Management Act, all shopping complexes, malls, cinemas halls, beauty parlours, restaurants and bars, gyms, swimming pools, spas, and sports complexes will remain closed till further notice.

All offices and educational institutions will be shut. Transport services, including the metro will not operate.

No cultural, political, academic, administrative or religious events and functions will be allowed. No outdoor congregations will be permitted between 9 PM and 5 PM,

What services will operate in West Bengal?

1) Petrol pumps and banks will operate from 10 AM to 2 PM.

2) All emergency services will be allowed.

3) Home deliveries and other online services will remain active.

4) Grocery stores will stay open between 7 and 10 AM. 

5) Sweet shops will remian open from 10 AM and 5 PM.

Mamata Banerjee said that the jute industry will work with 40% workforce in place of the existing 30%, PTI reports.

West Bengal reported 16,225 COVID-19 cases on Wednesday. The tally stands at 13,18,203. COVID-19-related death toll in the state is at14,827.
