Microblogging site Twitter on Thursday said it will strive to comply with the Indian Government’s new IT rules but stay in constructive conversation with the government to reach a common ground, reports PTI.

This comes after the Indian government said the social media platforms like Facebook, Whatsapp, Twitter and Google will face serious action if they fail to comply with the new IT rules 2021. Following this, Facebook-owned messaging app Whatsapp moved the Delhi High court challenging one of its clauses

Whatsapp argued that one of the new clauses is in conflict with its privacy policy as it requires them to reveal the identity of the originator of the message.

In response to Whatsapp’s lawsuit, the government of India on Wednesday said it respects the right to privacy of its citizens but may need to know the identity of a WhatsApp user for prevention, investigation, or punishment of serious offences.

So far, Google, Facebook and Twitter said are ready to comply with the new regulations, adding they will continue to discuss issues that need more engagement with the government.

Twitter is currently facing other issues with the government as well, with the Delhi Police conducting searches at its offices in Delhi and Gurgaon over its marking of tweets by BJP leaders as ‘manipulated media’.

On this, Twitter had said on Thursday that it is concerned about intimidation tactics used by the police in response to giving manipulated media tag to tweets by BJP leader.

The new

IT (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021, introduced in February require social media platforms like Twitter, Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram among others – to follow additional due diligence, including the appointment of a chief compliance officer, nodal contact person and resident grievance officer.

The rules came to effect on May 26.
