Every year, March 20 is celebrated as World Sparrow Day, where awareness to protect the common house sparrows is raised. Birds like sparrows, which could be seen in abundance once, have become a rare sight in recent years due to habitat issues, rise in urbanisation and shrinking vegetative cover.

Nature Forever Society of India and the Eco-Sys Action Foundation of France started the initiative of observing World Sparrow Day, reported NDTV. Conservationist Mohammed Dilawar, who was named by the Time as one of the “Heroes of the Environment” in 2008, had started the society.

According to wwfindia.org, sparrows are known to live in the backyards and green patches in urban areas, however, their population has declined significantly over the past few years.

It can be helpful to teach children to leave some water and grains on the balcony for the sparrows. It can also be useful to encourage having more greenery that will encourage the sparrows to live there.

With a harsh summer ahead of us, raising more awareness about birds and animals and taking care of them when they come in need of a cool shade or water is the least we can do to help them.
