Story of how 12 mangoes at Rs 10,000 each helped a girl attend online class

An 11-year-old girl’s dream of buying a smartphone so that she could attend online classes came true when a Mumbai-based businessman deposited a huge sum of money in her father’s account.

The girl from Jamshedpur, Tulsi Kumari, wanted to save money from the sales of mangoes so that she could study. Moved by her plight on a local media channel, Ameya Hete, deposited Rs 120,000 in her father’s account. He bought 12 mangoes at Rs 10,000 each.

“I was not able to bear the pain of not being able to attend online classes and therefore decided to sell mangoes so that I could buy a smartphone and continue my studies. Meanwhile, someone came to me during the lockdown on Sunday and took my video,” the new Indian Express quoted her as saying.

According to a media report, she stopped attending classes after the COVID-19 pandemic brought about the lockdown.

The Mumbai man said he was impressed by the girl’s determination and decided to help her financially. “She didn’t blame her fate or asked for alms. This is why I said we have bought her mangoes and not done any charity work. This is to not just to encourage her and acknowledge the dignity in work, but also to encourage others not to give up fighting,” Hete was quoted as saying by the TOI.

The businessman not only bought Tulsi a smartphone but also gave her a year-long internet connection.

“Now, I am happy that I have my own mobile through which I am able to attend my classes regularly,” the 11-year-old girl said.
