ABBA-tars: All you need to know about 1970s pop legends’ new concert

In one of the most anticipated pop reunions of all time, Swedish group ABBA will take the concert stage in London on Friday, however, only as their holographic selves from the 70s.

With glitzy costumes and flamboyant platform boots, the quartet will perform through their real voices without making an actual onstage appearance. 

Music lovers will see the group’s “ABBAtars” as holograms that will resemble how the pop icons looked during the peak of their stardom. 

Ahead of the premiere, band member Bjorn Ulvaeus told AFP in Stockholm, “We put our hearts and souls into these avatars and they will take over now.”

Concert-goers will be able to witness the avatars of group members Agnetha Faltskog, Bjorn Ulvaeus, Benny Andersson and Anni-Frid Lyngstad, whose first initials stand for ‘ABBA’, perform their musical hits from the 1970s and 1980s. The show, titled ABBA Voyage, will also include performances from the group’s comeback album.

Last year in September, the quartet treated fans by announcing the reunion and two new singles- ‘Don’t shut me down’ and ‘I still have faith in you’.

Two months down the line, ABBA released ‘Voyage’, a 10-track album, and announced that a “ground-breaking” concert at a “custom-built” London arena is in the works. 

Anxious about the possibility of receiving lukewarm responses to the holographic concert, Ulvaeus said, “This is one of the most daring projects that anyone has done in the music industry ever.”

“How it will be received by the audience, I don’t have a clue,” he said, adding that he thinks fans “will feel an emotional pull from the avatars, they will see the avatars as real people.”

“I don’t know about the others but, me, myself, I felt more nervous a month ago than I do now. I know that we have done our utmost,” the 77-year-old revealed.
